Permanent Protection of St. Croix Watershed Research Station
Partnership with Minnesota Land Trust and Washington County secures over 300 acres.
The Science Museum of Minnesota has announced the successful completion of permanent protection for 130 acres of forest and riverfront land at the St. Croix Watershed Research Station (SCWRS) via two conservation easements.
Details of the Easements:
- Tanglewood Nature Preserve – 103 acres of woodland and oak savanna, closed on June 30, 2026.
- Pine Needles – 27 acres of old-growth forest along the St. Croix River, featuring towering white pines and freshwater springs.
Together, these easements secure the last unprotected acreage at SCWRS, with a total of more than 300 acres now conserved.
Significance of Protection
The Pine Needles site has hosted the Artist at Pine Needles Residency for 24 years, benefiting both artists and the local community. This conservation ensures its future.
“Protecting the SCWRS completely is one of our greatest conservation achievements,” said Alison Rempel Brown, President and CEO.
Proceeds from the easements will support the SCWRS endowment and capital improvements, ensuring sustainable operational support.
Support and Funding:
- Wayne Ostlie, Director of Land Protection at the Minnesota Land Trust, emphasized the importance of these natural lands.
- Fran Miron, Washington County Commissioner, noted a $900,000 investment in conservation by the county.
The protection was made possible by Minnesota’s voter-approved Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment and funding recommendations from the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council.
