Porsche is pioneering a project focused on high-voltage battery recycling to recover valuable raw materials like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese for reuse in new batteries. In collaboration with recycling specialist Cylib, Porsche has successfully produced cathode materials entirely from 100% recycled resources. This innovation marks a significant step towards enhancing circular economy principles and improving resource efficiency.
Joachim Scharnagl, Porsche’s executive board member for procurement, highlighted this technological milestone, stating that it optimizes progress and sustainability. As the project progresses, Porsche aims to integrate these recycled materials back into new battery cells for test vehicles, further closing the loop in battery recycling.
The next phase involves assessing the quality of these materials to ensure they meet industry standards for battery performance. Initial tests show promising results, with further data expected by the latter half of 2026. The recovered materials will be traceable through a dedicated material account and are projected to be utilized in battery production by 2028, reducing dependence on globally sourced raw materials.
