HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – U.S. Space Command is set to introduce a new commander as it relocates its headquarters from Colorado Springs to Huntsville. The White House has nominated U.S. Space Force Lt. Gen. David Miller for promotion to four-star general and as the new leader of the combatant command. Currently, Miller is the Deputy Chief of Space Operations for Strategy, Plans, Programs, and Requirements.
This transition coincides with the upcoming retirement of Gen. Stephen Whiting, the current commander who facilitated the headquarters move to Redstone Arsenal. Whiting plans to retire in the coming months, pending Senate confirmation of Miller.
Additionally, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced significant military changes in his recent “State of the Force” address, including a 20% reduction in active-duty generals and admirals across all branches by January. He also revealed plans for the first new U.S. military base in 40 years and invited governors to propose locations for the installation.
Miller’s nomination is now awaiting confirmation hearings by the Senate Armed Services Committee.
