Nintendo Switch Users: Update Your System Software to Safeguard Against Security Vulnerabilities

If you’re an owner of the original Nintendo Switch, there’s an important security update you need to apply immediately, particularly if you use your console in public. Nintendo has disclosed a vulnerability as of September 10, right after the release of firmware version 23.0.0.

What’s the Issue?

The security flaw affects original Nintendo Switch users primarily when using the Send to Smartphone feature. This feature generates a QR code that allows users to transfer game captures and screenshots to their smartphones. However, if someone scans this QR code before you do, they could potentially connect their device to your Switch, which could lead to unauthorized code execution or data theft from your console.

This vulnerability also impacts players using Super Mario Kart: Home Circuit as that game relies on QR codes for establishing wireless links.

How to Fix the Problem

Nintendo has addressed the issue in the 23.0.0 firmware update, which resolves a “stock-based buffer overflow vulnerability” identified as CVE-2026-82079. Here’s how to ensure your device is updated:

  1. Go to System Settings > System > System Update.
  2. Follow any additional prompts to complete the update.

If you can’t update immediately, consider restricting the use of the Send to Smartphone feature to private settings or avoid playing Super Mario Kart in public spaces. Additionally, refrain from scanning any QR codes with devices that are not yours.

Conclusion

For those who play primarily at home, you should not have to worry about this exploit. Just ensure your console is updated to keep your information secure.
