Hyundai Poised to Surpass Ford in Q3 Sales as Detroit Automakers Fall Short on Hybrid Offerings

Hyundai Poised to Overtake Ford in U.S. Sales

New York International Auto Show, April 2, 2026

Hyundai Motor is projected to outsell Ford Motor in quarterly sales for the first time, according to a Cox Automotive forecast. Hyundai’s sales are expected to rise by 6.5% year-over-year, totaling 511,421 units, while Ford’s sales may decline by 7.1% to 504,172 vehicles.

This shift would position Hyundai as the third best-selling automaker in the U.S., behind General Motors and Toyota. Overall, new vehicle sales have surpassed expectations this year, prompting Cox to raise its 2026 forecast to 16.1 million units.

Ford’s Challenging Position

Ford, while maintaining its lead over Hyundai through August, cited the rapid rise of vehicles imported from South Korea as a challenge. The company pointed to tariffs and costs associated with U.S. production as factors making Korean production favorable.

Hyundai’s Growth Strategy

Hyundai has seen significant success in the U.S. market, aided by its luxury Genesis brand and sibling Kia. CEO José Muñoz emphasized that surpassing Ford isn’t a primary goal but a natural consequence of their focus on quality and execution.

Despite Ford’s issues with F-Series pickup production due to past disruptions, analysts note that both Ford and GM are appealing to a shrinking market segment lacking hybrid options.

Competitive Landscape

Toyota, the hybrid leader, is narrowing its sales gap with GM and may surpass them in annual sales for the second time this year if it continues its current performance.

Overall, the rising fuel prices are affecting large truck and SUV sales, challenging traditional Detroit automakers as they pivot towards gas-guzzling models amid changing economic conditions.

Summary

Hyundai’s expected rise in sales amid Ford’s decline showcases the evolving dynamics in the U.S. automotive market, influenced by product offerings, economic conditions, and strategic focus on consumer needs.
