Entrepreneur Cautions That California’s Wealth Tax May Drive Billionaires Away

Eric Schiffer, a California entrepreneur, has voiced strong concerns regarding the state’s proposed Proposition 40, which includes a one-time 5% wealth tax on billionaires. He predicts that such a tax could lead to a significant exodus of wealthy individuals and entrepreneurs from California, creating a “giant sucking sound” as they leave. Schiffer noted that many billionaires, who are already unhappy with the proposal, might not see any reason to stay if they are taxed again on wealth they have already built.

The proposition is set for a vote on November 3, and supporters argue it could generate much-needed revenue for the state. However, Schiffer warns it might backfire, leading to reduced investment, fewer jobs, and diminished economic opportunities for working Californians. He suggested that the tax could eventually extend beyond billionaires, impacting individuals with smaller fortunes as well.

Challenges to the proposal have also emerged from within the Democratic Party, with notable figures like Governor Gavin Newsom expressing opposition. Schiffer emphasizes that the tax threatens not just billionaires but the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem, suggesting that its passage would undermine California’s reputation as a business-friendly state, potentially stifling innovation and growth.
