Corn Snake Discovered in UK Grocery Store Aisle Amid Rise in Abandoned Exotic Pets, Say Rescuers

Baby Corn Snake Found in UK Supermarket Amid Rise in Abandoned Exotic Pets

In a peculiar incident in England, a baby corn snake was discovered near the bread aisle of a grocery store, prompting an animal rescue organization to express concern over an increase in abandoned exotic pets amid rising living costs.

Here’s What to Know

The snake, which has been named “Crumbs” due to her location, was found on August 14 at a Heron Foods outlet in Maryport, England. Pet Encounter, an animal education group based in Workington, Cumbria, took her in after the discovery.

According to animal handler Ben Nicholson, Pet Encounter has rescued 21 snakes this year, a significant uptick compared to 14 snakes during all of 2022. The causes for this increase are believed to be rising costs associated with keeping exotic pets.

More Background

Nicholson noted that the financial challenge of maintaining exotic pets, especially in a cost-of-living crisis, is leading some owners to relinquish their animals. Essential equipment like heat mats and bulbs contributes to ongoing expenses. Many pet owners often underestimate the long-term care requirements before acquiring these animals.

What Can Be Done?

With their intake numbers rising, Pet Encounter is exploring the possibility of achieving charity status. They also expect an influx of owls as interest grows with the upcoming “Harry Potter” series on HBO.

Nicholson stated, “We can’t say no to these animals.”

Where Can I Learn More?
