APOD: September 25, 2026 – Omega Centauri Globular Star Cluster

Omega Centauri: A Unique Globular Star Cluster

  • What is it?
Omega Centauri, also known as NGC 5139, is the largest and brightest globular star cluster in the Milky Way, housing around 10 million stars.

  • Location & Size:
It is located about 15,000 light-years away and spans approximately 150 light-years in diameter.

  • Characteristics:
Unlike typical star clusters that contain stars of similar age and composition, Omega Centauri features diverse stellar populations with varying ages and chemical abundances. This unique composition leads scientists to speculate that it may be a remnant core of a small galaxy that merged with the Milky Way.

  • Notable Features:
The cluster has a distinct yellowish hue, making its red giant stars easily identifiable. Observations using the Hubble Space Telescope over two decades have also provided evidence of a massive black hole at its center.
