Smurfit Westrock Acquires CMPC’s Containerboard and Corrugated Business
Date: September 24, 2026
Smurfit Westrock has announced a strategic acquisition of the Chilean Containerboard and Corrugated business from Empresas CMPC S.A. for $420 million. This acquisition is projected to have a post-synergy transaction multiple of less than 6 times Adjusted EBITDA.
The deal includes:
- One recycled containerboard mill equipped with a network of fiber collection centers.
- Three corrugated plants.
- One molded tray facility.
Strategic Importance
In their press release, Smurfit Westrock emphasized the complementary nature of the acquisition to their existing operations. The assets are strategically located near key fishery and agricultural regions in Chile, providing an excellent platform for growth in Latin America.
The acquisition includes a well-invested paper machine in Santiago, which produces approximately 250,000 tons per year. This facility will enhance Smurfit Westrock’s regional paper system by integrating recycled paper into operations in neighboring Argentina, Peru, and Ecuador, while facilitating the routing of kraftliner from Brazil and North America.

He noted that CMPC has nurtured this business for decades, bringing valuable expertise into Smurfit Westrock. Completion Timeline
The acquisition is expected to be finalized during the first half of 2027, pending customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.
