Quyanna Care Center Commemorates Its Growth

On September 17, patients, families, and Norton Sound Health Corporation board members celebrated the ribbon cutting of the newly expanded Quyanna Care Center (QCC), a $43.5 million project. The expansion doubled the center’s size, increasing bed capacity from 18 to 30, adding communal spaces, an outdoor deck, and renovating the kitchen.

Assistant Director of Nursing Elizabeth Coler emphasized that the expansion addressed the growing waitlist for the center, allowing more patients to stay closer to their families and communities. The QCC incorporates culturally relevant activities, such as dancing and drumming, and accepts donations of local foods.

The expansion was approved in September 2021, with construction starting in 2024. By September 1 of this year, residents moved into the new facility. The building features a large common area with high ceilings and a deck offering ocean views. This outdoor space allows residents to enjoy fresh air even in poor weather.

New patient rooms are designed for improved mobility and care, featuring accessible lifts, wider spaces for wheelchairs, and additional activity rooms. QCC caters primarily to Elders needing long-term care, with a state approval process for eligibility. While costs typically fall on the patient, NSHC assists with Medicaid applications.

Staff served celebratory meals in the renovated kitchen, where the new setup allows aromas to signal meal times. The expansion also necessitated hiring more nursing staff and a dedicated activities coordinator.

The opening featured performances from local dance groups, creating a vibrant atmosphere enhanced by natural light from large windows, promoting patient well-being and engagement in the community.
