Nissan’s Mobility Initiative Launches Public Transit in Namie

Nissan has successfully transitioned its Namie Smart Mobility trial in Fukushima Prefecture into a permanent public transport service, set to commence on October 1, 2026. The initiative, operated by Moplus under a municipal contract, follows five years of community-focused field tests.

Initially launched in February 2021 to assist recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, the project incorporated resident feedback, leading to improvements like user-friendly interfaces, SumaMobi Kids for children, mini digital bus stops, and QR code dispatch systems.

With the transition to a municipal service, Nissan aims to leverage insights gained during the trials for future mobility projects tailored to regional needs.

Masafumi Yamada from Namie’s Planning and Finance Division emphasized the new integrated service will enhance efficiency and support the town’s goals for sustainable public transit, fostering a community attractive for current and future residents.
