San Jose Enterprises Seek Alternatives to Major Events for Revitalizing Downtown

Adolfo Gomez, owner of Mezcal in downtown San Jose, highlights the impact of major events like the Super Bowl and FIFA World Cup on his restaurant. This week, as San Jose hosts the WeAreDevelopers convention, Gomez welcomes numerous software developers, including a group from an AI startup. However, he faces the challenge of maintaining customer traffic once these events conclude, having adjusted his operating hours after the pandemic.

The shift in San Jose’s daily dynamics since the pandemic has affected lunch crowds, with fewer office workers downtown. Despite the bustling nightlife, Gomez notes that the absence of daytime visitors diminishes potential sales.

Sead Ahmetović, CEO of WeAreDevelopers, mentions that San Jose’s selection for their convention reflects its tech industry significance. Despite this positive image, Gomez feels that perceptions of downtown can sometimes deter visitors.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan acknowledges the need for a diverse economic strategy beyond major events, aiming to foster housing development to support downtown vibrancy. Gomez’s ultimate hope is for a thriving downtown that attracts visitors throughout the week, not just during events. Meanwhile, marketing organization Visit San Jose projects continued growth from conventions, with an expected 10% increase in economic impact this year and a rise in hotel bookings for the next year.
