NASA and Axiom Collaborating on Streamlined Spacesuit for Artemis Program

NASA is actively simplifying Axiom Space’s lunar spacesuit as part of the Artemis mission to return astronauts to the Moon by 2028. Reports indicate that a streamlined version of the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), internally referred to as the “sortie suit,” is being developed. This design aims to reduce the suit’s complexity, mass, and requirements, focusing on essentials for early lunar missions while still addressing safety regulations.

As the suit is like a mini spacecraft for astronauts, it must maintain pressure, supply oxygen, and protect against radiation and extreme temperatures. The simplification process retains vital safety features while eliminating requirements that may not be necessary for the initial lunar landings.

The development timeline for AxEMU is tight, with necessary tests and qualifications still pending. This suit will need to operate consistently with two lunar landers: SpaceX’s Starship and Blue Origin’s Blue Moon. NASA also plans to evaluate AxEMU in a controlled environment before launching missions, ensuring readiness for the complexities of lunar operations.

Ultimately, the objective is to determine the essential capabilities required for astronauts to safely step onto the Moon in 2028, setting the stage for more advanced operations in the future.
