Updates on the New Community Space in Building 4 – The Skyline View

Learning Community Space at Skyline College

Skyline College is set to transform two ordinary classrooms on the lower floor of Building 4 into a vibrant Learning Community Space for students in five learning communities: Kababayan, First Year Experience, Puente, Humoja, ASTEP, and the Center for Innovative Practices through Hip Hop Education & Research.

Purpose of the Renovation
According to Lauren Ford, Vice President of Student Services, the renovation aims to create a unique communal space on campus. “I hope that the space is one of community building,” Ford expresses.

Addressing Logistical Concerns
The new space will also resolve a logistical challenge faced by the college. The Intercultural Center, although vital for student meetings, struggles to accommodate multiple communities simultaneously. Ford believes the new rooms will provide dedicated venues for meetings, enhancing opportunities for networking, collaboration, and leadership among students. “There’s no door so it’s not closed off,” she explains, emphasizing the communal aspect of the gathering space.

Progress and Student Involvement
Ford is excited to see the project develop, noting the transformation of the classrooms into new huddle spaces. Furniture is projected to arrive later this semester, allowing students to influence the design and ambiance of the rooms actively. Marisa Thigpen, the learning community program services coordinator, is facilitating student input to establish community norms and decor ideas.

Measuring Success
Ultimately, the success of this initiative will be gauged by student engagement. “Success is that students are using it,” Ford states, highlighting the importance of students feeling ownership over their new space. As preparations continue, the classrooms are already showing signs of their impending transformation, marking a new chapter for Skyline College.
