Omnivision has introduced the OAX7700, a highly efficient AI processor aimed at enhancing vehicle camera systems with always-on parking surveillance. Unveiled at AutoSens Europe on September 21, 2026, this ultralow-power ASIC boasts a 97% reduction in power consumption compared to existing solutions and is set for mass production in Q1 2027.
The OAX7700 features a neural processing unit (NPU) that facilitates edge AI tasks such as human presence detection, object detection, and distance measurement. Its always-on mode allows the camera to monitor surroundings with minimal energy use, capturing up to 10 seconds of footage before any triggered event. This design minimizes false alarms from external disturbances while providing crucial evidence during incidents. Importantly, the chip supports over-the-air updates, enabling developers to deploy custom AI algorithms, which is essential for software-defined vehicle (SDV) technologies.
David Ho, Omnivision’s Senior Marketing Manager, emphasized that the OAX7700 integrates modern surveillance functionality into existing automotive systems while supporting ongoing software enhancements throughout the vehicle’s lifespan. This innovation benefits from technology previously developed for the security market, further establishing Omnivision’s leadership in the field.
