Okonite Company to Expand Operations in Orangeburg County
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – A significant investment is on the horizon for Orangeburg County as the Okonite Company, a trusted name in cable and wire manufacturing since 1878, has announced plans for a $400 million expansion. This project is set to create 105 new jobs in the community.
As one of the oldest electrical wire and cable manufacturers in the U.S., Okonite caters to various sectors, including electric utilities, oil and gas, railroads, and chemical industries. The company operates 34 locations across the nation, two of which are situated in Orangeburg County.
To accommodate the increasing demand for its products, Okonite will construct a new 552,000-square-foot manufacturing plant at its existing site located at 2276 Rowesville Road. Construction is slated to commence in late 2026, with completion expected within two to three years.
The expansion has received support from the Coordinating Council for Economic Development, which approved job development credits and awarded a $1.5 million Rural Infrastructure Fund grant to assist with site preparation and construction.
Governor Henry McMaster noted that this expansion highlights the economic opportunities and skilled workforce in South Carolina. Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III described the $400 million investment as a considerable economic advantage for Orangeburg County.
