Family and Educator Engagement in STEM Activities Introduces Students to a Range of Career Opportunities | FIU News

The activities children engage in with their families and friends significantly influence their future academic and career choices, particularly in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math). Research from FIU’s STEM Transformation Institute, led by Chris Irwin and Zahra Hazari, highlights how early exposure to STEM activities and discussions with influential figures can boost children’s motivation to pursue STEM careers.

Their study, which surveyed 15,725 first-year college students across 119 U.S. institutions, identified three distinct categories of students based on their enthusiasm for STEM and their inclination to use these skills to help others. They discovered that while many students enjoy STEM, those who also aim to contribute positively to society face challenges in committing to STEM careers. Although two-thirds of students intending to pursue STEM careers cited helping others as a motivator, those more focused on altruism tended to shy away from STEM.

The researchers emphasize the role educators and parents play in broadening students’ awareness of the diverse career options within STEM and how those roles can address social challenges. They advocate for a messaging shift that portrays STEM as a service-oriented field, demonstrating how STEM professionals contribute to societal well-being. By fostering connections between STEM and social responsibility, the researchers hope to inspire more students to pursue STEM careers while aligning with their desire to make a positive impact.
