Pikachu Returns from Space Station to Launch ESA x Pokémon Collaboration

Pikachu’s Cosmic Adventure: ESA Exhibition Launches

On September 19, 2026, it was revealed that Pikachu, the beloved Pokémon, participated in a unique journey to the International Space Station (ISS) earlier this year. The plush toy spent 67 days aboard the ISS from April 11 to June 17 as part of a campaign to promote the European Space Agency (ESA) and its mission.

Pikachu arrived at the ISS via a Northrop Grumman Cygnus cargo spacecraft and returned on a SpaceX Dragon capsule, donning a custom white spacesuit complete with a mission patch. His stay aligned with ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot’s ongoing mission. Celebrating its 1,040 orbits around Earth, Pikachu’s mission is the catalyst for a new traveling exhibition that merges space exploration with the world of Pokémon, aimed at sparking public interest.

ESA Collaborates with Pokémon

The exhibition, which kicked off during ESA’s Open Days in Paris, seeks to engage a diverse audience. Josef Aschbacher, ESA’s Director General, expressed the initiative’s goal: “By taking space exploration beyond traditional settings, we hope to ignite curiosity and wonder about our universe.”

The family-friendly exhibition includes displays featuring Pokémon characters to introduce visitors to various scientific topics. A notable installation showcases a statue of Pikachu in a spacesuit, while an introductory panel serves as a gateway to the collaboration, titled “Attention Trainers…”.

Mathieu Galante of The Pokémon Company emphasized the spirit of discovery that aligns with both the Pokémon franchise and space exploration. He noted that this partnership opens new avenues for engagement, inviting fans to experience the wonders of space alongside Pokémon.

Interactive Experiences and Merchandise

The exhibition will explore European space missions, astronaut support, solar studies, and broader cosmic explorations. In addition to the physical displays, a digital expansion is set to roll out: starting during World Space Week from October 4, 2026, until April 30, 2027, Pokémon GO will feature in-game activations at participating science and space museums across Europe. Trainers will have the chance to encounter Astronaut Pikachu through special events and limited-time gameplay.

Exclusive ESA x Pokémon merchandise will also be available at various retail outlets, including ESA’s own shops and partner museums.

Upcoming Exhibition Stops

Following its debut in Paris, the Pokémon exhibition will tour various ESA facilities, including:

  • ESRIN in Rome: September 25, 2026
  • ESTEC in Noordwijk: September 26-27, 2026
  • ESOC in Darmstadt: October 2, 2026
  • ESAC in Spain: October 3, 2026
  • ECSAT in the UK: October 10, 2026

The exhibition will also visit major European museums, including the Cité de l’espace in Toulouse and the Science Museum in London, continuing through April 2027.

This initiative not only celebrates Pikachu’s voyage into space but also aims to inspire a new generation of space enthusiasts and Pokémon fans alike.
