50 Years Ago, NASA Launched Its First Space Shuttle, Enterprise: “It Truly Inspired Me,” Says ISS Astronaut

Jack Hathaway’s Space Dreams and the Legacy of the Space Shuttle Enterprise

Jack Hathaway, a test pilot, has long aspired to fly the most advanced winged vehicles. Recognizing the significant milestone, he reflected on NASA’s first space shuttle orbiter, the Enterprise, which debuted 50 years ago on September 17, 1976. This prototype demonstrated that reusable spacecraft could launch like rockets and glide back for landing.

Despite his dream of piloting such a craft, Hathaway became an astronaut a decade after Enterprise became a museum piece in 1985. “It was definitely one of my goals… but it was pretty awesome,” he said, acknowledging the impact of the shuttle program on modern space exploration.

Historic Rollout and Public Enthusiasm

Excitement surrounded the Enterprise’s rollout, which was celebrated with performances and appearances from “Star Trek” cast members. Its naming was influenced by a grassroots campaign, reflecting public enthusiasm for both space and the iconic show. Lawmakers, like Barry Goldwater, emphasized the shuttle’s potential to advance human knowledge and exploration.

Actor Leonard Nimoy recalled the moment fondly, recognizing it as a “great day for America.” The Enterprise eventually found its home at the Intrepid Museum in New York, where it continues to inspire future generations.

Inspiring Future Astronauts

NASA astronaut Jessica Meir, born shortly after the Enterprise’s reveal, cites the shuttle program as a significant influence on her aspirations to become an astronaut. She vividly remembers classroom launches sparking her interest in spaceflight, highlighting the enduring legacy of the Enterprise’s missions.

The Enterprise’s notable flights in the late ’70s, including atmospheric tests and public demonstrations, aimed to engage and inspire the public. Meir’s reflections encapsulate the orbiter’s lasting impact on the next generation of space explorers, emphasizing the importance of the shuttle program in shaping aspirations and dreams in space exploration.
