Xi’s Visit: Auto Industry Appeals to Trump to Prohibit Chinese Car Manufacturers in the U.S.

In May 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump was welcomed by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng at Beijing Capital International Airport, accompanied by notable figures like SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

In a recent letter, the U.S. automotive industry urged Trump to maintain strict policies against Chinese automakers, expressing concerns that permitting them to manufacture in the U.S. could undermine competition and threaten the progress made in curbing “Chinese dominance” in vital sectors. Industry leaders highlighted that the automotive sector is crucial for U.S. manufacturing and national defense, emphasizing the risks of allowing Chinese firms to enter the market, given their heavy government subsidies.

As Trump prepares for a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the automotive coalition, representing all major U.S. manufacturers and dealers, is pushing for policies to keep Chinese competition at bay.
