‘Walhalla Strong’: Community Unites After Major Fire
WALHALLA, S.C. — In the aftermath of a devastating fire that tore through downtown Walhalla’s Main Street, local business owners are banding together to support one another.
Just one day after the blaze destroyed several businesses, community members, led by the owner of Willow Lane Cottage Gifts, Tammy Smith, have launched fundraising efforts. Smith, whose shop is only a few stores away from the damaged buildings, has set up donation buckets and electronic options at her register to assist her fellow business owners.
“It is very tight-knit. We survived, and they didn’t. I want to do what I can to help,” Smith expressed, emphasizing her commitment to her friends and neighbors.
In addition to her efforts, plans are in motion for ‘Walhalla Strong’ T-shirts and stickers, with proceeds benefiting the ‘Walhalla Fire Relief’ fund established at local Blue Ridge Bank branches.
Smith, while grappling with feelings of survivor’s guilt, is determined to contribute to the community’s recovery. “We are all in this together, and we will help them out,” she stated.
The city’s mayor, Tim Hall, announced plans for a benefit concert to support those affected by the fire. He also revealed that a meeting is scheduled for next week to discuss available financial assistance options with impacted business owners, local organizations, and the municipal association.
“We want to gather all that together and have a roundtable discussion,” Hall said, emphasizing the city’s commitment to supporting its local businesses during this challenging time.
