National Democrats Allocate Resources to Two Iowa Senate Races | Iowa Campaigns and Elections

Iowa Senate Elections Targeted by National Democrats

Key Open-Seats in Central Iowa

National Democrats are ramping up their efforts to support Democratic candidates in Iowa Senate races, particularly in two key districts. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) has officially included two open-seat elections in its target strategy, focusing on Iowa Senate District 23 and District 11.

District 23: A Competitive Race

In District 23, located in Polk County, Democratic candidate Tony Thompson is vying for the seat against Republican Wes Enos. This seat became available following the retirement of Republican Sen. Jack Whitver, who has been battling a health crisis.

District 11: Another Key Race

District 11, encompassing parts of Warren and Marion counties, has also opened up due to the passing of Republican Sen. Julian Garrett. Sinikka Waugh, the Democratic contender, will face off against Republican Hollie Arlene Zajicek for the seat.

Current Political Landscape

As it stands, Republicans hold 33 seats in the Iowa Senate compared to the Democrats’ 17 seats. While Republicans maintain a clear majority, they fall short of a supermajority, which they previously held until recent elections in 2025.

Support from National Democrats

The DLCC aims to provide resources and support for candidates in these targeted races. Heather Williams, the DLCC President, expressed confidence in a shift in momentum for Iowa Democrats leading into the upcoming elections.

“We see potential for change,” Williams noted, citing past election successes that have begun to diminish GOP control. She emphasizes the importance of these races in conjunction with the gubernatorial election, where Democrat Rob Sand is running against Republican Zach Lahn.

Looking Ahead

With the general election set for November 3, the stakes are high for both parties.

Farmers for Turek: Growing Endorsements

In related news, Josh Turek, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, has recently garnered 15 new endorsements from Iowa farmers, adding to a growing list. Turek faces off against Republican Ashley Hinson and Libertarian Thomas Laehn.

Farmers supporting Turek include a diverse group, from corn and soybean growers to cattle ranchers, reflecting a strong agricultural backing as he campaigns throughout the state.

Both elections spotlight the evolving political landscape in Iowa, with significant implications for both state and national party dynamics.
