Lowcountry Pet Owners Face Challenges Due to Increasing Expenses

Rising Costs Strain Lowcountry Pet Owners

As expenses related to pet care escalate, many pet owners in the Lowcountry are facing tough decisions about their furry family members. Rescues in Georgia and South Carolina report an increase in requests from owners looking to surrender their pets due to financial constraints.

Economic Impact:

  • The cost of veterinary care has risen by 42% over the past five years, while pet food prices have climbed 25%.
  • This trend is compounded by rising prices for everyday necessities like groceries and housing.

Amy Campanini, president of Palmetto Animal League, noted that “the economic impact on people right now has made it a lot harder for them to keep their other family members that we call pets.”

Surrender Requests:

  • Renegade Paws Rescue in Savannah has recorded 636 applications for pet surrender in just five months, which doesn’t include additional inquiries.
  • Rescue staff indicate that they can currently accommodate only 50 to 60 dogs, falling short of demand.

Contributing Factors:

  • Housing limitations also play a significant role. Many rentals do not permit pets, while others impose hefty fees that burden pet owners financially.
  • Campanini remarked that certain food banks have reported requesting “almost double what they usually receive” to help families in need.

Resources Available:
Both Renegade Paws and Palmetto Animal League urge pet owners facing difficulties to reach out for assistance before making the decision to surrender. They offer medical care and run food banks to help struggling families.

For those considering helping out, fostering or volunteering with these organizations can make a significant impact.
