Making the Right Decision: Sherman Graduate Starts Business with Support from BOCES Experience

Local News Feature: Colton Courtney’s Agricultural Journey

Sherman Central School graduate Colton Courtney has embarked on a significant new venture with the opening of The Branding Iron of Sherman, a retail meat store located at 121 W. Main St. This store, which opened its doors on August 1, aims to offer locally raised products to his community, showcasing the skills he honed while attending the Small Animal Science program at Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES.

Background in Agriculture

Courtney’s connection to agriculture and animals has deep roots. Growing up on a farm, he was already familiar with livestock, but he chose BOCES for its practical, hands-on approach. He quickly realized this was the right fit for him, stating, “Within the first week, I knew it was the right choice for me.”

His training not only covered animal care but also encompassed essential skills in math, writing, and business. Mock job interviews and securing recommendations during his time at BOCES also built his confidence for future endeavors.

The Branding Iron

The Branding Iron specializes in frozen retail meats, including beef from Courtney’s own Texas Longhorn operation. The shop also features locally sourced pork, chicken, vegetables, and various products from local producers. The idea for the store was inspired by visits to similar businesses in Ohio, igniting a long-held dream of his.

Courtney reflects on the effort put into realizing this dream: “A lot of blood, sweat, tears, and cash went into this place.” His agricultural lineage runs deep as he is a third-generation Texas Longhorn producer, having bought his first bull at age 10.

Advice for Future Entrepreneurs

Reflecting on his diverse career path—which included roles as a livestock auctioneer and a brief stint in college—Courtney encourages students to explore various opportunities. “Don’t be scared to try something,” he advises. “It took me a long time to figure out where I wanted to go, and BOCES helped me get there.”

As he continues to run his business, Courtney remains grateful to influential figures like Mr. Shields, his Small Animal Science instructor, and acknowledges the value of learning from peers in a diverse educational setting.

The Branding Iron stands as a testament to Courtney’s passion for agriculture and his commitment to serving his community, embodying the spirit of local entrepreneurship.
