Joby Cessna Caravan Successfully Undertakes Its Inaugural Autonomous Flight Across the US

Joby Aviation has successfully completed its first fully autonomous transcontinental flight across the United States. Utilizing a modified Cessna Caravan, the aircraft flew 3,199 miles without any pilot intervention, concluding in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, near the historic Kitty Hawk site.

During the flight, the aircraft demonstrated autonomous capabilities including taxiing, takeoff, navigation, and landing, all while monitored remotely from up to 2,323 miles away. Key stops included Phoenix Deer Valley airport, where it effectively integrated with live air traffic, and the flight showcased real-time rerouting capabilities in response to severe weather conditions.

Joby’s CEO, JoeBen Bevirt, emphasized the potential of autonomy in aviation for connecting remote communities, delivering essential supplies, and enhancing disaster response. Their advanced autonomy system, acquired from Xwing in 2024, has completed over 400 flights and has been tested in military scenarios, proving capable of reducing conventional supply chain timelines significantly.

This milestone pushes the industry to reconsider the commercial viability of autonomous air logistics.
