Is Eckerd’s Marine Biology Program the Right Fit for You? | Science and Technology

Eckerd College has a well-known marine science program that attracts many aspiring marine biologists each year. In 2025, 43.3% of first-year students expressed an intention to pursue this major, though many eventually shift to different fields. Assistant professor Whitney Bullock reports that he frequently meets students contemplating a change in major, often to find a better academic fit for their career goals.

Misconceptions about marine science—such as the belief that it solely leads to roles like marine mammal training—contribute to this trend. The interdisciplinary nature, heavy workload, and challenging courses deter some students, while others simply feel misaligned with the program.

Despite high enrollment in introductory courses, many students drop out as they seek paths that better match their interests. However, some, like senior Brienna Nguyen, find inspiration from personal experiences that help them persevere through difficult coursework.

Ultimately, while many students diverge from marine science at Eckerd, they have the opportunity to explore various academic paths, reflecting the college’s liberal arts educational philosophy.
