Europe’s prototype spacesuit, known as EuroSuit, is currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS), having been launched on SpaceX’s CRS-34 Cargo Dragon mission. European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot conducted its initial fit and dexterity checks and provided crucial feedback, indicating that the suit still requires improvements.
Designed for intravehicular use—specifically during launch and landing—EuroSuit is a collaboration between the French Space Agency (CNES), Spartan Space, MEDES, and Decathlon. One of its key innovations is its ease of use; astronauts can don and doff it in under two minutes, an essential feature during emergencies.
While the suit’s ergonomics were assessed in Adenot’s tests, further development is needed, particularly regarding life-support systems and communication. The project aligns with Europe’s strategic goal of enhancing autonomy in human spaceflight.
Adenot emphasized that the EuroSuit is in the early stages of its development, and ongoing adjustments will be made based on her feedback and that of other astronauts.
