Arts Festival Inspired by Infidelity Parables Launches in Tainan

The Zhamei Arts Festival, held in Tainan’s Anping District, opened on September 19, inspired by a Chinese parable related to infidelity. The festival has been organized to support Chen Hsing-yu, daughter of former President Chen Shui-bian, following her recent divorce. It features a blend of free and paid performances, including Taiwanese hand puppetry and Hokkien opera, with themes tied to the parable’s narrative about betrayal.

The festival’s name references a story involving Justice Bao, a legendary figure known for his integrity, and a prince consort who concealed his marriage, committed infidelity, and faced severe consequences. Organizers connected the story to Chen Hsing-yu’s own experiences, especially following her public disclosure of her divorce and accusations against her ex-husband, Chao Chien-ming, through a Google Maps review on her birthday.

What began as a satirical idea quickly gained traction, enabling organizers to fund the event through public support. The first two nights featured free events, followed by catered banquets showcasing Taiwan’s culinary culture. Notable performances included a production of “The Execution Case of Prince Consort Chen Shimei,” presented by the Goodoo Puppet Troupe and various Taiwanese Hokkien opera groups.

The festival emphasizes community involvement and celebrates Taiwanese arts while reflecting on personal narratives woven into the cultural fabric.
