ArtPrize Launches in Grand Rapids with a Focus on Space Themes

ArtPrize Returns to Grand Rapids with Cosmic Twist

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — ArtPrize has officially kicked off in Grand Rapids, marking a significant year for the festival with organizers heralding it as the biggest in nearly a decade.

Space-Bound Art

For the first time, the event introduces a groundbreaking opportunity: the winning artwork will be sent to space. In collaboration with California aerospace startup Reflect Orbital, the winning piece will be digitized, engraved onto a plaque, and attached to a satellite launched into orbit. ArtPrize Deputy Director Coleman Brook noted, “I’m not sure an arts organization has ever gone to space before.”

What to Expect

The two-week festival promises to be a spectacle, featuring the world’s largest string instrument and an ambitious attempt to set a record for the largest fashion show attendance. Brook emphasized the scale of this year’s event, stating, “ArtPrize is bigger and better this year, and we think this is the year that really solidifies it as Art City, USA.”

Community Engagement

With anticipated attendance exceeding 1 million visitors and showcasing 1,025 entries—the highest number since 2018—the event is capturing attention from far and wide. Local attendee Brina Tiemeyer expressed her enthusiasm, “This event is great; I bring my kids every year.”

Surprising many, some visitors, like Matt and Beverly, discovered the festival by chance while exploring the town, stating, “We’ve just really started the process of bouncing from place to place, and it’s been super cool.”

Highlighted Artworks

One standout piece is a replica of the Mackinac Bridge constructed from 20,009 K’NEX pieces. Artist James Derck shared that the project originated as a fun family activity, and despite concerns about transporting such a large piece, it arrived safely.

Reflecting on the positive public reaction, Derck admitted, “Right now I’m just being humbled by this experience.”
