Porsche is advancing its battery recycling efforts in Europe, addressing the vulnerabilities of automakers in global raw material supply chains. In collaboration with recycling firm cylib, Porsche has successfully produced battery cathode active material entirely from recycled materials for the first time. This innovation allows for the full replacement of primary raw materials like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese in battery cell production.
Joachim Scharnagl, Porsche’s procurement executive, highlighted this achievement as a significant technological milestone, emphasizing its role in promoting circular economy principles and enhancing resource efficiency. Dr. Lilian Schwich from cylib noted that their project effectively reintroduces valuable materials from end-of-life batteries into new high-performance batteries.
Launched in 2025, the project aims to supply battery cells by 2028. It has been processing batteries from Porsche Centers in Germany since May 2026, utilizing a water-based method, with promising initial results expected to be confirmed later in the year.
