Investment Boost in U.K. Automotive Manufacturing
This week, Nissan Motor Corp. and McLaren Automotive announced substantial investments in U.K. manufacturing as part of their strategies to expand vehicle lineups.
Nissan’s Commitment
Nissan is investing £170 million (approximately $229 million) at its Sunderland plant to produce the new Nissan Kicks e-Power hybrid B-segment crossover. This marks an addition to its current production of models like the Qashqai, Juke, and Leaf. The Sunderland facility, which is the largest single-site car manufacturing plant in the U.K., has celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. With this investment, the Kicks becomes the 10th model produced in Sunderland, contributing to Nissan’s goal of establishing the site as an electric vehicle hub.
McLaren’s Strategic Investment
Meanwhile, McLaren is committing £500 million to enhance R&D and production capabilities, looking to boost vehicle output, including a new performance SUV. This investment aims not only to create new assembly facilities but also to develop in-house powertrains for the first time. McLaren plans to create 1,000 jobs in the U.K. by 2032, potentially unlocking an additional 3,000 jobs across the sector.
Government Support
These investments are significant as the U.K. government has been encouraging growth in the automotive sector through a grant program worth up to £4 billion to bolster vehicle electrification efforts. While Nissan and McLaren’s investments are not directly linked to these grants, they support the overall industrial strategy aimed at boosting local production.
Industry Responses
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) welcomed these announcements, emphasizing the need for continued investment in competitiveness in the automotive sector to attract further manufacturers. U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham highlighted the collaborative effort between government and industry as vital for revitalizing communities and enhancing regional prosperity.
