Malba Selects Architect for Expansion That Will Increase Exhibition Area by Twofold – The Art Newspaper

Expansion of Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba)

The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba) has selected Mexican architect Frida Escobedo to design a significant expansion that will double its exhibition space. This project, set to be built beneath the adjacent Plaza Perú, is anticipated to open between late 2029 and early 2030. Additionally, Malba’s founder, Eduardo Costantini, has initiated a $50 million trust to strengthen the museum’s financial future.

Architect Frida Escobedo

Frida Escobedo, who established her studio in Mexico City in 2006, has also expanded to New York, where she is working on a new modern art wing for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Earlier this week, the Met’s new wing broke ground. Escobedo is also involved in the renovation of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and she became known as the youngest architect to design London’s Serpentine Pavilion in 2018.

Details of the Expansion

The expansion will introduce new galleries for temporary exhibitions, an auditorium, multipurpose spaces, workshops, and storage areas. It will provide new cultural connections to the city through a sculpture garden, new entrances, and a landscaped courtyard approximately 600 square meters in size. Importantly, this will not reduce Plaza Perú’s size or restrict public access.

Costantini emphasized the integration of the two buildings in Escobedo’s design, enhancing the connection between the original structure, the plaza, and the public.

Goals of the Expansion

Escobedo stated that the expansion aims to transform Malba as a whole, allowing for simultaneous activities in film, literature, and educational programming even outside regular hours. Costantini expects construction to begin in 2027, with ongoing efforts to secure additional funding.

The museum aims to lessen its financial dependence on Costantini by growing the Malba Art Trust, enabling contributions from other families, institutions, and international donors. Currently, Costantini provides about $3 to $4 million annually to offset the operating deficit.

Revisions in Governance

In anticipation of the changes, governance structure adjustments are in place, shifting the Costantini family to minority status on the board. This transition facilitates the inclusion of new members. Part of this strategy involves donating the Daros Latinamerica Collection, comprising 1,232 works from 117 artists, along with additional significant works from Costantini’s own collection.

Upcoming Celebrations and Events

As part of Malba’s 25th anniversary celebrations, a fundraising gala was held, and future exhibitions are planned, including “Viva Frida,” showcasing works from Frida Kahlo at Casa Azul, along with an international symposium featuring significant art figures.

This expansive project signifies a substantial evolution for the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, enhancing its offerings and cultural significance while establishing a sustainable financial framework for the future.
