Auto Industry Downturn Impacts Tourism in Saltillo

The article highlights the significant impact of the automotive sector’s downturn on Saltillo’s tourism industry. The hotel occupancy rate has sharply dropped to about 49%, marking a decline of 16 to 18 percentage points, according to Raúl Rodarte from the Saltillo Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Rodarte explained that the recession in the automotive sector is particularly pronounced because Saltillo hosts over 4,000 hotel rooms primarily designed for business travelers. While the city is recognized for its automotive cluster, it also engages in home appliance and steel production.

To combat the downturn, efforts are underway to revitalize tourism by emphasizing a cowboy theme through events at Expo Coahuila, alongside promoting boutique hotels, haciendas, and adventure activities to attract visitors to experience the local culture.
