US military announces its initial deployment of weapons in space

The United States has confirmed that it possesses weapons in space designed to defend against hostile actions, marking a significant development in military strategy. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink made the announcement at the Air and Space Cyber Conference, emphasizing that these measures are aimed at addressing evolving threats.

While Meink did not disclose specific details about the capabilities, he highlighted the importance of being prepared for challenges in space, especially considering concerns over potential threats from nations like Russia and China. In 2024, U.S. officials expressed worries about Russia’s development of space-based anti-satellite systems, though they noted these systems were not yet operational.

Meink also discussed the Air Force’s shift towards autonomous systems, predicting that by 2032, the military’s structure would look significantly different, with one-way attack drones potentially replacing traditional artillery.

The U.S. Space Force, established in 2019, plays a crucial role in this evolving landscape of military preparedness in space.
