As school resumes, civics and science educators gain a wealth of new resources – Tri-State Alert

New Educational Resources for Pennsylvania and Maryland Schools

As schools in the tristate area get back into full swing, educators in Pennsylvania and Maryland are presented with fresh resources aimed at enriching their curriculums.

Pennsylvania’s Civics Education Initiatives

The Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts (AOPC) has launched new civics education resources designed for all age groups, framed within the spirit of America250. These materials will help students grasp the evolution of Pennsylvania’s courts, their historical significance, and their ongoing impact on civic life.

Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, Debra Todd, emphasized the importance of understanding the judicial legacy, stating, “Learning about Pennsylvania’s judicial legacy can help young people recognize the vital role our courts play in protecting individual rights, resolving conflicts, and strengthening communities.”

These resources complement existing materials on the civics education webpage, which includes content created for the PA Supreme Court’s 300th anniversary.

Maryland’s Science Education Tools

In Maryland, agricultural leaders have introduced new science resources aimed at inspiring future environmental stewards. The program, Welcome to Your Watershed, developed by the Maryland Department of Agriculture and Maryland Public Television, engages elementary and middle school students in lessons about the water cycle, the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and conservation practices.

Designed for grades 3-5 and 6-8, this multimedia collection allows students to explore the global water cycle, factors affecting water movement, and the relationship between watershed activities and the Bay’s health. The program includes supplementary activities on farming and conservation, along with a comprehensive Teacher’s Guide to align lessons with educational standards.

Access: Welcome to Your Watershed is available for free on Maryland Public Television’s Thinkport educational website.

As educators look to enhance their instructional offerings this year, these state-backed resources promise to engage students through interactive and relevant learning experiences.
