The US has confirmed the deployment of weapons in space, acknowledging the existence of “space control weapons” intended to counter adversarial threats, according to a spokesperson from the Space Force. This admission comes amid rising competition from China and Russia, both of which are enhancing their own space capabilities.
Troy Meink, the Air Force Secretary, emphasized the importance of maintaining US dominance in space, highlighting a few specific weapons systems currently in orbit, such as the Space-Based Interceptor and the Space-Based Air-Moving Target Indication constellation.
The acknowledgment is seen as a strategic measure to ensure military and economic security in the increasingly congested environment of Earth’s orbit, where space is becoming a contested domain. With thousands of satellites, including SpaceX’s Starlink, operational, the challenges associated with weaponizing space are escalating.
Meink noted that while specific details about the systems won’t be disclosed, readiness to counter threats is a priority for the US.
