Tonne-Sized Space Manufacturing Facility Set for 2028 Launch

Space Cargo Unlimited is set to launch a one-tonne space factory aboard SpaceX’s Starfall re-entry vehicle in 2028, a pivotal advancement in commercial manufacturing in microgravity. This mission aims to enhance the company’s manufacturing capability from 100 kg to a tonne, shifting in-space manufacturing from experimental to routine commercial production.

The company offers services for businesses looking to produce goods in microgravity, managing everything from pre-launch integration to final return to Earth. This streamlined approach enables companies to capitalize on space-based manufacturing without investing in their own spacecraft.

Potential applications for microgravity manufacturing include pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and advanced materials, capitalizing on unique manufacturing processes and material properties that are unachievable on Earth.

The 2028 mission is part of a broader strategy to create a fleet of orbital factories. Space Cargo Unlimited is developing REV1, a larger autonomous factory and re-entry vehicle in collaboration with Thales Alenia Space, utilizing technology from ESA’s Space Rider program.

Nicolas Gaume, CEO, emphasized that the primary challenge in microgravity manufacturing has transitioned from scientific feasibility to making access commercially viable and scalable. Currently, they are in talks with over 100 potential clients, with a significant interest from life sciences and biotechnology sectors.

If successful, this mission will greatly increase microgravity manufacturing capacity, pushing towards larger, repeatable industrial operations in low Earth orbit.
