Over 40 cyclists participated in a 140-mile ride from Johnstown to Pittsburgh to honor the sacrifices made by EMS workers. Organized by the National EMS Memorial Bike Ride, the event reached Allegheny General Hospital just before 9 a.m. on Monday, followed by a memorial service at Heinz Chapel.
Nico Soler from Allegheny General Hospital emphasized the ride’s purpose: “The ride commemorates those who have fallen before us due to emergencies on duty or illness.” Fellow participant Liz Cethner shared her experience, stating that during tough stretches, she drew strength from the memory of those lost in the line of duty and the support of her colleagues.
This year’s event was particularly poignant as it followed the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Scott Newton, an EMS worker for 38 years, expressed the importance of honoring the families affected by such tragedies.
This marked the 11th year of the ride and the second time it took place in Pittsburgh.
