Families flocked to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) campus on Saturday morning, but it wasn’t a typical move-in day. Instead, they gathered for the Cool Science Carnival Day for Kids, celebrating its 17th year. The event featured interactive science labs, demonstrations, and exhibits, allowing children of all ages to dive into Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM). By 2 p.m., crowds were still exploring the numerous booths and activities.

Highlights from the Event

Danielle Nixon attended with her son, Prince, who expressed his fascination with space and his desire to become either a professional football player or an astronaut one day.

Families began arriving as early as 8:30 a.m. Woody Fogleman, along with his children, Rebecca (13) and Alex (11), eagerly participated in activities, marking their desired stops on a list. By 2:30 p.m., they still had 10-12 activities to enjoy, with Rebecca particularly excited about creating seed balls and looking forward to the geology and slime tables.

Alex was engrossed in woodworking, crafting a robot head and drilling eyes. The Civil Air Patrol provided a rocket building and launching booth, and nearby, children could explore a glider from the U.S. Air Force Academy.

A Family Experience

Among the attendees were Hannah Neagle, her husband Brian Banko, and their daughter, Olivia, who had just exited the glider and remarked that “everything” was her favorite part of the day. Hannah praised the enthusiastic volunteers at each station, emphasizing the exposure her daughter had to various STEM activities, which included wiring a light bulb.

“I want to be a vet one day,” Olivia shared, expressing delight in the live animals and veterinary demonstrations.

The Cool Science Carnival Day not only provided a fun-filled experience but also inspired young minds towards future aspirations in science and technology.
