Tampa’s TNT Burger: Navigating Rising Food Costs and Inflation
TAMPA, Fla. – A beloved local burger joint in Tampa is grappling with the challenges posed by escalating food costs and inflation.
Crafting Creative Flavors in Tampa
Opened in 2020, TNT Burger has quickly captured the hearts of locals with its innovative menu and vibrant social media presence. From their quirky “Cheesy Beast” to the amusing “COVID-19 Vaccine Burger,” complete with a saucy syringe, the restaurant is known for its playful burger creations.
Owner Carolina Martinez shared, “I think the funnest part is seeing how the people react.”
The Weight of Rising Expenses
Martinez noted, “We really started feeling the inflation last year, especially in the food prices.” Items like beef, French fries, and tomatoes have seen significant price hikes, compounded by increasing rent and commercial insurance costs. Due to inflation and hurricane-related damages, TNT Burger was forced to close its newer South Tampa location.
Nationwide Trends
This local struggle mirrors nationwide issues facing the restaurant industry. The National Restaurant Association reports that total expenses have surged by 36% since 2019, leading to 42% of operators being unprofitable last year.
“We try to keep our prices affordable for our customers, but we also don’t want to compromise on food quality,” Martinez explained, emphasizing their commitment despite shrinking profit margins.
Community Support
Martinez remains hopeful and dreams of expanding TNT Burgers throughout the state. “We are here because we truly love what we do,” she said, expressing gratitude for customer support amidst the competitive landscape. “Thank you for continuing to support our small business. We really appreciate it.”
