Impaired Cognitive Development: The Risks of Generative AI on Children’s Minds

The Los Angeles Unified School District has announced a ban on student use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on school devices starting in the 2026-27 academic year. This decision aligns with the New York City Public Schools as both districts navigate the complexities and unknowns surrounding the safe use of such technologies.

As generative AI evolves, many educators and researchers express caution due to potential negative impacts on children’s cognitive development. Studies show that children using AI tools, like ChatGPT, may shortcut their learning processes, leading to diminished engagement and critical thinking skills. Evidence suggests that while high school students may perform well on practice questions with AI assistance, their test scores drop significantly when AI is no longer available.

Research highlights concerns about “cognitive stunting,” where reliance on AI could inhibit mental growth, similar to physical stunting from malnutrition. Further research indicates that children and adults process AI interactions differently, with children showing less brain engagement in areas crucial for attention and processing.

While some researchers advocate for a cautious approach to AI access in schools, there are mixed opinions about outright bans. Educators believe that fostering responsible AI usage is essential and that opportunities for guided interaction can help students learn to use AI productively.

As the landscape of AI technology continues to evolve rapidly, the challenge remains for educators and policymakers to establish effective guidelines and safeguards for its usage in school settings.
