Conroe Investigates the Possibility of Establishing a U.S. Space Academy in the City | Conroe – Montgomery

Conroe is exploring the possibility of hosting the newly proposed U.S. Space Academy, prompted by City Council members David Hairel and Shana Arthur. They discussed researching potential opportunities for the academy during a council meeting on September 10, highlighting Deison Technology Park as a suitable location.

This initiative follows President Donald Trump’s executive order calling for a commission to create plans for the Space Academy, which aims to focus on technical education and leadership in partnership with NASA. The commission has a 120-day timeline to produce recommendations, including potential locations for the academy.

Hairel emphasized that hosting the academy could significantly boost Conroe’s economy through new educational partnerships and developments in aerospace and technology. He and Arthur suggested exploring avenues such as forming public-private leadership teams, conducting feasibility studies, and identifying funding opportunities.

Although no formal steps have been decided yet, the inquiry aligns with NASA’s recent call for states interested in hosting the academy. Responses are due by October 26, with hopes to start groundwork by 2027 and aim for a permanent campus by 2031. This exploration is in the initial stages, with Conroe’s potential fitting into the broader selection process headed by the state and federal levels.
