Airbnb is committing $6.4 million to advance an affordable housing project in Northeast Austin, part of its Housing Accelerator initiative. The funding will facilitate the construction of 201 affordable apartments at 800 E. St. John Ave., required under a city agreement to enable a larger mixed-income development of 325 units. The broader project aims to provide over 500 homes, commercial spaces, a park, and public art, with completion expected by 2028.
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky announced the initiative at the Austin Central Library, highlighting that this project has been in development for 20 years. He acknowledged Airbnb’s previous role in the housing crisis, stating the company has worked to prevent homes from being taken off the market for short-term rentals.
The company’s new initiative will start with $250 million in financing, aiming to unlock over $5 billion for housing construction in the next decade. This effort comes amid criticism of Airbnb’s impact on long-term housing availability. Austin leaders praised Airbnb’s investment as a crucial collaborative step toward addressing the city’s housing shortage, emphasizing the importance of partnership across public, private, and community sectors.
