West Seattle’s Retro Gas Station Transforms into a Contemporary Food Market

Space Age Gas Station Remodel Underway

The Space Age Gas Station, located at 7850 35th Ave SW, is currently undergoing an extensive remodel. This transformation involves permanently enclosing its former three-bay auto repair garage to make way for an expanded full-service convenience store and mini-mart.

Current Status & What to Expect

  • Fuel Operations: The station’s six fueling pumps are operational, with major upgrades to electrical and pump infrastructure completed in spring 2026.

  • Construction Progress: Crews are framing the former garage doors and preparing the building for retail. However, before the store’s official opening, the station must complete interior improvements and obtain necessary permits.

  • Opening Date: An official date for the store’s opening has yet to be announced.

Anticipated Features

Once completed, the revamped gas station will offer a modernized retail experience, featuring:

  • Store Design: High-efficiency LED lighting, wood-grain accents, bold signage, and updated storefront glass.
  • Beverage Hubs: A “Coffee Planet” program for bean-to-cup coffee, along with multi-valve soda and slushie stations.
  • Hot & Fresh Food: Self-serve hot displays with options like breakfast sandwiches, burritos, and a unique biscuits-and-gravy dispenser.
  • Cold Grab-and-Go & Bakery: Daily fresh pastries, pre-packaged sandwiches, salads, and fruit cups.

A Neighborhood Landmark

This remodel signifies a significant transition for a site that has been a local fixture since 1969. Originally known as Hegge Chevron and founded by Ted and Sharon Hegge, the station remained family-owned until August 2024, when it was sold to Oregon-based Space Age Fuel after over five decades of operation.

Stay tuned for further updates as the remodeling progresses!
