The Ocean State Labs, Rhode Island’s first life science incubator based in Providence, was celebrated earlier this year for its opening while also facing a leadership transition. Mark Turco, its previous CEO, resigned abruptly in March, leading to the appointment of Bob Cormier in June. Cormier brings over 25 years of experience in the healthcare and medical-device sectors, previously serving as CEO of Sentec.
Cormier emphasized the importance of establishing credibility for Rhode Island-based companies to compete effectively in the life sciences sector. He aims to connect local companies with the clinical community to facilitate the faster adoption of technologies that can benefit patients. Cormier highlighted the need to address gaps in Rhode Island’s ecosystem and expressed his commitment to driving growth in the life sciences field.
Since its opening in May, approximately 15 companies have joined Ocean State Labs, with initiatives like the Founders Compass program planned to attract more. Cormier also addressed concerns about funding, clarifying that while the hub has significant resources remaining, he will work with state officials to secure long-term investment plans.
He defined success for the Life Science Hub in terms of local job creation and successful innovations reaching the market, aiming to double the workforce in life sciences over the next decade.
