Shickshinny Educator Recognized as Statewide Advocate for Agricultural Science Education – Wilkes-Barre Citizens’ Voice

Heath Hines from Shickshinny has been appointed to the Teacher Leader Community, a prestigious national fellowship aimed at enhancing science education through agricultural practices. As one of only ten educators chosen across the U.S., Hines will spearhead initiatives in Pennsylvania to link classroom science with real-world agricultural applications, addressing educational excellence and workforce development in agricultural sciences.

Selected by Nourish the Future, a national STEM initiative focused on modern agriculture, Hines was recognized for his innovative teaching methods and ability to inspire both students and colleagues. Heather Bryan, the education lead at Nourish the Future, emphasized that effective STEM education thrives on real-world contexts, such as agriculture, and praised Hines for his potential to transform science education in Pennsylvania.

The fellowship includes a $25,000 investment in Hines’ professional development, covering specialized training, attendance at the Nourish the Future Community Conference in St. Louis, and collaboration with industry scientists. Hines is expected to design and deliver professional development sessions for Pennsylvania educators, sharing strategies to make science relatable through agricultural contexts.

Bryan highlighted that using agriculture as a lens for learning science motivates students to explore critical scientific careers in the agriculture sector, addressing job gaps in the industry. The fellowship, supported by the Soy Checkoff and the National Corn Growers Association, also provides classroom resources and connects educators with agricultural professionals. Hines joins a network of over 170 Teacher Leader alumni, impacting thousands of classrooms across the nation. For more information, visit nourishthefuture.org.
