Many men are unaware of the connection between dairy consumption and prostate cancer risk.

September: Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

A recent survey highlights a concerning gap in knowledge regarding dietary risks associated with prostate cancer. Only 20% of men interviewed were aware that consuming dairy products could elevate their risk of developing this cancer. However, upon learning about this risk, 66% indicated they would consider avoiding dairy.

Survey Insights

Conducted by Morning Consult for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), the survey included 1,102 U.S. men. Alarmingly, it revealed that merely 20% had received information from healthcare professionals regarding the link between nutrition and prostate cancer risk. Noah Praamsma, MS, RDN, emphasized the need for increased education among healthcare providers on dairy’s dangers and the advantages of a plant-based diet.

Research on Dairy and Prostate Cancer Risk

Multiple studies have established a correlation between high dairy consumption and an increased risk of prostate cancer:

  • A meta-analysis of 32 studies suggested that those consuming more dairy products had a higher cancer risk.
  • Research indicated that men drinking at least one serving of skim or low-fat milk daily faced a 19% increased risk compared to infrequent consumers.
  • Another study found that men consuming about 3 servings of low-fat dairy per day were more than twice as likely to develop prostate cancer as those consuming less than one serving daily.

Dairy intake may even be related to mortality rates from prostate cancer. A meta-analysis revealed that men who consumed the highest amounts of whole milk had up to a 50% higher risk of death from prostate cancer.

Impact on Food Labeling Attitudes

Interestingly, 76% of men in the survey expressed support for warning labels on dairy to inform consumers about prostate cancer risks.

The Benefits of a Plant-Based Diet

Encouragingly, the majority of survey participants acknowledged that foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans may help reduce prostate cancer risk. Studies support that a 100% plant-based diet is particularly beneficial.

For instance, the Adventist Health Study-2 found vegan men had a 35% lower risk of developing prostate cancer than their non-vegetarian counterparts. Additionally, among men already diagnosed with prostate cancer, those consuming the most plant-based foods exhibited a 56% lower risk of progression and a 59% lower risk of recurrence.

Prostate Cancer: A Major Health Concern

Prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer among men in the U.S. and the second leading cause of cancer death. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 333,830 new cases will be diagnosed in 2026, with 36,320 fatalities projected.

Conclusion

With the immense impact of dietary choices highlighted by recent research and surveys, raising awareness about the link between dairy consumption and prostate cancer, while promoting plant-based diets, could significantly benefit men’s health.

Founded in 1985, PCRM advocates for preventive medicine and rigorous standards in research and education.
