Donor Quest: Watertown Business Executive Seeks Kidney Donor | Local News

Community Support for Dave Yelk in His Fight Against Kidney Failure

WATERTOWN – Dave Yelk, a well-known local real estate agent and community advocate, is facing a significant health challenge. Recently diagnosed with Stage 3 kidney failure, Yelk is seeking both a kidney donor and community support as he navigates this difficult time.

A Lifelong Contributor

Yelk has made a lasting impact on the Watertown community through his work with Realty Executives Platinum and as an ambassador for the Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce. With numerous accolades from satisfied clients, he has also made substantial contributions to local businesses and historical organizations, including the Watertown Historical Society, where he coordinates volunteer efforts and helps with fundraising.

However, in 2025, Yelk learned of his kidney failure diagnosis—a shocking revelation that has since transformed his life. With a declining GFR rate, he now faces two paths: dialysis or finding a living donor.

Understanding Kidney Failure

Kidney failure affects nearly 131,000 Americans annually, with many living with the disease. The consequences are severe, including restrictive diets and significant lifestyle changes for those affected. Yelk describes his daily struggles with hydration, sleeplessness, and constant discomfort.

While dialysis could prolong his life, it comes at the cost of regular, intensive treatments—three four-hour sessions each week. Unfortunately, the donor waitlist is extensive, with the current national waiting list exceeding 95,000 individuals.

The Path to a Donor

Finding a donor can be a lengthy process. Options include deceased and living donors, but the odds heavily favor living donations, which yield longer-lasting results. In light of this, Yelk is focused on spreading awareness about the need for kidney donors and the unique opportunity that the National Kidney Registry’s Standard Voucher Program offers.

This program allows potential donors to give altruistically, even if they are not an exact match, while receiving a voucher that places their intended recipient at the top of the matching list.

Community Support

Yelk’s dedication to his community has also sparked a rallying response from those who know him. Local leaders and friends describe him as exceptionally generous and dedicated, with many advocating for support in his search for a donor.

“Dave’s selfless contributions and community spirit make him beloved in Watertown. Now it’s time for us to return some of that kindness,” says Robin Kaufmann, Watertown Tourism Director.

Looking Ahead

Yelk remains hopeful as he shares his story, emphasizing the importance of community support. He is grateful for any assistance in spreading awareness and finding a donor. Once he is able to travel safely again, Yelk dreams of a beach getaway with his wife, indulging in a well-deserved steak dinner.

For those willing to help, more information can be found on his National Kidney Registry page.

This story underscores not only the challenges faced by individuals with kidney failure but also highlights the power of community support in addressing such a profound health crisis.
