Expansion of Northern Colorado’s Open Space to Include Historic Buildings

The Town of Windsor in Northern Colorado recently acquired a significant 70-acre piece of land for $6.2 million, adjacent to the Windsor Wastewater Treatment Facility and Kodak Open Space. This purchase includes a historic farm and homestead, originally home to Aaron Eaton, a key figure in the area’s early settlement and development.

The acquisition not only preserves history but also enhances local green spaces, wildlife habitats, and provides access to the Cache la Poudre River. Windsor has also secured water rights for this property. This initiative aligns with the community’s vision for conservation and recreational enhancements, supported by a .25% Open Space Tax approved by voters.

Wade Willis, Windsor’s Open Space and Trails Manager, emphasized the importance of this acquisition for current and future generations, highlighting its role in supporting recreation, conservation, and community involvement in planning. The town aims for a total of 1,290 acres of open space in the community.

The community will have a say in the future development plans for this valuable site.
