The City of Arvada is contemplating the introduction of paid parking in Olde Town, sparking concern among local business owners about potential negative impacts on sales. Ali Larsen, owner of the boutique Walking Mermaid, argues that the area embodies a community spirit beyond just shopping, and she believes parking availability is not a significant issue. Debbie Hansen, who owns La Dolce Vita cafe, shares similar sentiments, expressing that the additional cost of parking could deter customers.
Conversely, city officials believe that implementing charged parking could enhance turnover, attracting more visitors, and generating funds for parking management and community projects. Rachael Kuroiwa, the director of communications and engagement, noted that free parking exists in the nearby Olde Town Hub garage but is often underused.
Business owners, however, feel the proposal addresses a nonexistent problem and are hopeful that the city will reconsider during the upcoming City Council meeting.
